Random thoughts from a work-addled brain:

One of the most transcendent sights ever has got to be early morning sunlight in spring when the sun’s rays slant low across the land, illuminating trees covered in new leaves and wind-ruffled grain fields against a backdrop of darkness as the next line of storms converges. The brilliance against the blue-black clouds this morning was almost enough to make me run my car off the road. I sure wished I had a camera – but this phenomenon, of course, would never be captured by even the best digital instrument. It’s something in the translation between eye and brain, and best preserved therein, I think.

Spring grain fields in that sort of light, damp after the evening’s rain showers, glow with iridescence. Gorgeous even without a wind to convert them to sea-green waves.

Little baby calves look askance at the four-wheeled contraptions whizzing past their fenced pasture. I wonder what they think cars are.

Apparently peacocks are stimulated by full-moon nights. Oberon sang repeatedly long after dusk and was busy calling well before dawn. I wonder if he will do it again tonight, when the moon’s actually full. I hope not.

Chocolate pound cakes, even when they fall, are awesome. I wish I knew how to keep this particular recipe from falling, but I’m enjoying the first baking as an OMG awesome rich! super brownie, anyway. Why pound cake? It has the virtue, on this farm of many chickens, of using a half-dozen eggs at a time. And it can be frozen, and eaten later. I’ll keep working on my technique; this recipe is a keeper.

For those of you who read my earlier cry for help with the router, you’ll be amused to note that I finally punted. I’ve ordered, instead of the air card, a MiFi, which (I’m advised) operates like a mobile hotspot. It’s supposed to support up to five wireless devices simultaneously. Keep your fingers crossed – I really want to be able to get online in the evenings once the work’s done!
