Yep, I remembered how to hurt Jody. His grief for what he lost in the previous book is still very close to the surface, and others' pity isn't helping.

I'm still not sure whether planning out the plot elements beforehand is working. My problem has always been that I under-write (under-sell?) the story and have to go back over and over again to add in what's obvious to me but missing for everyone else. I can be somewhat better assured, I suppose, that in working from an outline I stand a better chance of getting things on the page, but that doesn't mean they won't still need flesh on their bones.
On a positive note, however, I do know where I'm supposed to be going. That's helping with the initial focus when I sit down to write, something I also needed.
As always, it's a tradeoff.
