Ah, fireflies. I was telling S about them the other day and wishing aloud that there will still be enough around for her to see when she gets older. She got the saddest look on her face. I maybe share too many things with my 2.5 yo. o.O
They're still out there, in the places where the people don't flood the night with artificial illumination. They (the bugs) can't find mates through the glare of the lights. Out here in the middle of nowhere, with my nearest neighbor's lights just visible through the trees and none of my own outside, it's like the stars came down to dance in the meadow--and will be, as long as I'm around to enforce the no-lights rule.
