If you were a pirate in 1720 and you had a small wooden barrel that you wanted to refill with drinking water at the local cistern, would you just pull out the bung and attempt to pour water from the bucket into the bung hole?

That would depend on the hole size. I would probably make a funnel of some kind so I wouldn't have to work as hard to get the water in the barrel. Or, I might rope the barrel and drop it into the water to fill it up and then pull it up.
